Kegiatan kemasyarakatan merupakan salah satu wujud terpenuhinya Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi oleh mahasiswa. Di dalam melakukan kegiatan kemasyarakatan, hal paling utama yang dapat dilakukan oleh suatu organisasi adalah berani memulai. KMKL-ITB ingin memulai langkah baru dalam melaksanakan kegiatan kemasyarakatan dengan membuat suatu program kerja unggulan bernama “Sekolah Mentari”. Program kerja ini telah berhenti terlaksana di dalam kepengurusan KMKL-ITB sejak tahun kepengurusan Teknik Kelautan 2012. Sebelumnya, terdapat beberapa mahasiswa Teknik Kelautan yang telah menjadi penanggung jawab untuk mengumpulkan volunteer Rumah Mentari di luar program kerja KMKL-ITB, diantaranya adalah Rizky Duanita (KL’14) dan D Khoirin Nisa (KL’15).
Sekolah Mentari – merupakan suatu program pengabdian masyarakat berbentuk kegiatan belajar mengajar di Rumah Belajar Mentari yang berlokasi di Jl. Raya Golf No.78 Rt.03/05 Kampung Sekepicung, Ds. Ciburial, Kec. Cimenyan, Kab. Bandung. Siswa yang diajar umumnya berupa anak-anak dengan umur berkisar 4-12 tahun. Pelaksanaan Sekolah Mentari tahun 2019-2020 ini dapat diikuti oleh seluruh anggota biasa KMKL-ITB dimulai sejak 29 September 2019 lalu. Para volunteer yang ikut harus mendaftar terlebih dahulu untuk menjadi seorang ‘Kambing’ – memiliki makna Kakak Pembimbing untuk adik-adik di Rumah Mentari – agar dapat dihitung kuota volunteer pada setiap kegiatannya. Kegiatan Sekolah Mentari ini diadakan setiap dua minggu sekali di hari Minggu dengan kegiatan yang bervariasi. Beberapa kegiatan tersebut diantaranya bertema kreativitas karya, mendongeng, mencintai lingkungan, hingga menghafalkan lagu nasional. Banyak diantara kakak pembimbing tersebut yang semakin mengenal dengan adik-adik di sana dengan mendengarkan cerita mereka, bermain bersama, dan juga mengajarkan hal baru kepada mereka. Selain dekat dengan adik-adik, program Sekolah Mentari ini juga memperbolehkan para ‘Kambing’ untuk berkeliling dan bersosialisasi dengan masyarakat. Mereka berkenalan dan bercengkrama dengan pemilik Rumah Belajar Mentari yang bernama Ibu Dewi dan Bapak Lala. Dengan bersosialisasi, para volunteer menjadi lebih mengenal serta memahami isu-isu kemasyarakatan yang sedang terjadi di wilayah tersebut.
Pada 24 November 2019 kemarin, kegiatan Sekolah Mentari mengusung tema yang berbeda dari rangkaian sebelumnya. Sebelum menutup liburan semester dengan adik-adik di sana, kami para volunteer ingin melakukan suatu kegiatan yang melibatkan para Ibu-ibu. Sehingga, terlaksanalah suatu kegiatan bernama ‘Ngaliweut’ yang melibatkan masyarakat di sana dalam mempersiapkan makanan. Acara pun berjalan dengan lancar kendati pun masyarakat yang hadir kurang dari yang direncanakan. Namun, dengan adanya acara ini kami dapat mendengarkan cerita menarik dari sudut pandang Ibu-ibu disana. Harapannya, hubungan KMKL-ITB dengan masyarakat di Desa Sekepicung menjadi semakin baik dan dekat. Satu kalimat yang selalu kami dengar dari adik-adik disana, “Kak, minggu depan kesini lagi kan?”. Minggu menjadi hari yang ditunggu bagi mereka, bagaimana dengan kita sebagai Kakak pembimbingnya?
